Throughout this project I developed a variety of different skills and this screen recording will show you the steps, ideas and skills I went through and learnt during the process. You can also see the change along the way including the details.
My first photoshoot wasn't as amazing as it could have been immensely improved. It wasn’t horrible but it had many areas that needed improvements such as camera focus and different angled shots. I then decided to do another photoshoot, where I used different camera angles and poses and also different lighting, such as key lighting. The skills I developed from this photoshoot were different lighting locations and camera settings. These skills helped me understand how to try out different looks. This photoshoot also helped me understand how time management is important as towards the end, I started to rush everything. This photoshoot also helped me learn at the end that I should have picked different Mise en scene props as different makeup styles and different clothing. I think this is because while I was editing, I struggled to add new things due to the model wearing the same outfit for the whole magazine, stopping me from mixing and matching the colours.
Another one of my skills that developed was my photoshop skills. In this process, I have learnt many tips and tricks on photoshop.I now know how to work with layers, how to airbrush flawlessly on photoshop, rotating images, copy cut and pasting, rescaling and lastly duplicating layers. My skills were improved with the help of tutorials on youtube. These tutorials clearly explained the methods that I need to learn and understand. I used a template on canva for my first draft and I then went to photoshop and learned my new skills to build a much better quality, elegant magazine. You can see from the work uploaded on my blog that the photo-shopping on the model was detailed and gave her a flawless yet natural look. I wanted the background to be a cloudy, ethereal one.
To achieve this, I had to go on google and pick out a pastel blue cloudy sky photo. After I had copied it, I applied a new layer and moved it behind the image of the model. Io then had to spend a lot of time removing the unnecessary background of the model's image. This helped me develop the skill of erasing unwanted details much more quickly and efficiently. My new learning skills have helped me to understand the fact that editing a photo in-depth can take up to more than 5 hours if not done efficiently. For example, editing the skin tones and removing big parts such as the background of the original photos can be time-consuming. I conducted a lot of research on different fashion magazines and their codes and conventions, which is shown on my online blog on Weebly.
This research allowed me to see trends such as fancy mastheads that included different colours for different seasons, grabbing the reader's attention and how the anchorage text is always on one side of the magazine. I tried very hard to include all of that in my production work and I do believe that my magazine meets the codes and conventions of a fashion magazine. During this whole process, the contents page and double-page spread page were easy to complete as I knew what theme I was going for, which was established by my front cover. The most challenging part was writing out the double-page spread article and what to include on my contents page.I needed to match my language carefully with the needs of my audience over several paragraphs which was challenging. As well as choosing a topic that would appeal to them. Because of this, I was forced to look at contents pages and articles of fashion magazines such as Vogue in-depth, and understand what type of styles they are presenting.
Overall, I have learned many skills related to photoshop and this has helped me understand how important planning and time management are.
